Holistic Oral Care
What Is Holistic Oral Care?
Holistic oral care professionals are not only
committed to their patient’s oral health, but
are also committed to the patient’s over all
health, as well as mindful of the impact that
their practice has on the environment.
Researchers are finding more and more
conventional dental practices to harmful and
toxic to the rest of the body. Holistic dentists
weigh the risk of total body health against the
needs of oral health and apply solution that
meets the needs of both. Just like their
traditional colleagues, holistic dentists
provide preventative care as well as treatment
for oral problems. However, the way in which
they do this, is drastically different. The
first difference a patient will notice is the
lack of X-ray equipment. Many holistic dentists
for go the dangers of exposing their patients to
radiation and releasing chromium and other
harmful toxins into the environment, and use
digital imaging instead.
Traditional amalgam is silver-based or contains
mercury. Both of these substances are very toxic
to the body. These substances are released from
the amalgam when it is heated up by ingesting
hot food or beverages. Substances can also be
released by grinding teeth during sleep. Mercury
poisoning occurs when this heavy metal builds up
in the body. It can accumulate over time and
reach toxic levels causing damage to the central
nervous system, the immune system, and some of
the sensitive organ systems. The dental waste
from applying these fillings is so toxic that
the Center for Disease Control requires that the
waster water be filtered before it reaches the
sewage system. Holistic oral care replaces the
use of amalgam fillings with safe biocompatible
materials that contain no heavy metals. Holistic
dentists will even replace old amalgam filling.
Another lesser known risk of traditional
dentistry is fluoride. Fluoride is very toxic
and one of the main ingredients of rat poison.
The United States Agency for Toxic Substances
and Disease Registry has posted fluoride on a
list of the top 20 compounds dangerous to you
humans. Studies show that there are much higher
occurrences for those how have too much fluoride
built up “fluoridosis”, than those who don’t
have enough fluoride. Flouridosis can result in
darkening of the teeth, neurological problems,
and weakening of the bones. Because fluoride is
in the water, holistic dentists take their
patients off of fluoride in other products and
place importance on good oral health care
practices at home, and routine maintenance.
Other non-traditional practices employed by
holistic dentists biological microscopic
monitoring which allows the doctor to monitor
the rate of bacteria growth under the gums. This
is a great help in the prevention of gum
disease. When braces are necessary, orthopedic
orthodontics are applied. This is a process
where the doctor accesses the condition of the
muscles in the face, head, and neck to assure
that they are properly aligned. This process
makes aligning the teeth easier, and makes it
more likely that they will stay in place.
Holistic oral care is a concept based on the
idea that imbalance in one part of the body will
cause health problems elsewhere. It emphasizes
patient education, nutritional supplements, and
safety to the total body health in treatment.
