Organic Hair Care
There are many reasons to switch to organic hair
care. Today the market is flooded with hair care
products that are unhealthy for the consumer and
bad for the environment. There are no
regulations or standards for hair care products.
Companies are not required to place all of the
ingredients on the labels. Non-organic products
contain synthesized chemicals that can be
damaging to the hair and toxic to the body.
Hair care products that use plants and natural
extract in their formula are not only less
toxic, but have a better chance of giving hair
and scalp, the nutrients needed to be healthy.
The largest organ in the human body is the skin.
It is not only a covering. Skin is porous in
design, to allow for absorption of certain
nutrients, but just as it can take in water and
ultraviolet light, it can all absorb harmful
chemicals and toxins.
Since there are no regulations to tell companies
what they can put in hair care products, there
are no regulations telling them how much of a
particular chemical is safe to put in hair care
products. The problem is that some of these
chemicals are toxic to humans. Parabens is a
common ingredient in shampoos because it
inhibits growth of bacteria. The body recognizes
this chemical as estrogen. Heavy amounts of
parabens have been found to coincide with breast
cancer.
Propylene Glycol is a moisturizing chemical that
is common in shampoos, conditioner, antifreeze
and brake-fluid. It is also a neurotoxin that
causes damage to the liver and kidneys.
Lauramide and cocamide are chemicals that add
that luxurious foaming quality to certain
shampoos. Unfortunately these chemicals are
absorbed by the skin easily were it can bond
with materials in the body to form nitrosamines,
which are very strong carcinogens.
There are some regulations about safety testing.
All that is needed for a hair care product to go
on the market without a warning label is that
the company tests it for safety. Unfortunately,
that is where the regulations stop. The company
is not required to disclose their testing
methods. Often, the testing methods involve
testing on animals.
Organic hair care products provide a healthy
alternative, while providing the same if not
better results. The danger of many of these
chemicals comes in because they are synthesized
materials, presented in a form that confuses the
body. There are many substances that occur in
nature that do the same job as these chemicals,
without having to be synthesized. The problem in
researching organic hair care products is that,
again, there are little to no regulations for
these products.
Manufacturers can claim to include organic and
natural ingredients without actually doing so.
There are several places that list many products
and the truth about what is in them. It is
possible to check one of these on-line safety
indices. Many have various ways of listing
products and chemicals to make them easy to
navigate.
