Conserve Rainwater
Why conserve rainwater? Well, check out the
world around you. There are droughts everywhere,
there is a water shortage, you may even find
that you are not allowed to water your plants.
Conserving rainwater is a great way to protect
our water supply, save money, and give our water
source time to replenish.
It is for this reason that many people are now
beginning to purchase rain barrels or cisterns
to harvest rainwater and make use of it.
Conserving rainwater helps our environment and
actually works to save you money at the same
time. How do you save money? Well, think of the
water bill, the prices, the increases, and the
energy it takes to get that water.
By collecting rainwater when it rains,
obviously, you can use this water for many
different things and save money all at the same
time.
What are the uses of rainwater?
There are many. First, you can use rainwater to
water your garden or landscapes, which is ideal
as trees, lawns, and garden actually benefit
from rainwater. It does not contain the harsh
chemicals such as fluoride, chlorine, and
minerals that traditional water does, and then
add that to the fact that it is soft naturally.
There are other uses for rainwater, such as for
drinking water. However, this is only advised if
you have a filtration system to treat the water.
How do I Harvest Rainwater?
The first thing you need to do is purchase a
rain barrel or a cistern for your collection. It
is generally a good idea, for safety reasons, to
also obtain a very fine screen to place atop of
the container you intend to use as well. The
screen can help prevent children and animals
from entering the container, which could cause
drowning. The screen also helps in preventing
mosquitoes from getting to your water, which is
a concern especially with the West Nile Virus.
Once you have what you need, most people place
the container upon a roof for collection. If you
cannot do this, any spot that is open will do,
just make sure you take plenty of safety
precautions. Related Articles:
