Dishwashers Vs. Handwashing

Whether you grew up with a dishwasher or you have always washed your dishes by hand, you may end up wondering which method is best when it comes to keeping your environment going. When you are stuck between using the dishwasher or handwashing, you might find that some very basic information can help you put your mind at ease. The truth is, there is a lot that might surprise you in this debate, and what you learn can change the way you look at your dishes.

When thinking about dishwashers versus handwashing when it comes to environmental terms, you will find that you end up thinking about water and how to best avoid wasting it. In this particular debate, there are a few different viewpoints. In the first place, if you are someone who washes dishes in small batches by hand throughout the day, there is a good chance that the dishwasher is beating you in terms of water conservation. A dishwasher can use one set amount for rinsing dishes while you will use the same amount three times during the course of the day if you rinse your dishes at various times. You'll find that running the dishwasher just once a day can save you plenty of water.

Another thing that will come up in the handwashing versus dishwashing debates is the question of energy. While excluding the energy that you yourself put forth, you'll find that the answer to this question is again a bit murky. Most of the power that goes into washing dishes in a machine goes directly towards heating the water. When you wash dishes, unless you are washing them in cold water, there is energy being put forth there as well. This depends on how long it takes you to wash the dishes. If you stand there for a significant period of time with the hot water running, it is still conceivable that the dishwasher might be more efficient.

You will also find yourself wondering about cleanliness. Once again, you will find that opinions vary, but in general, it has been determined that unless there is something caked onto your dishes that only time, soaking and elbow grease will remove, the dishwasher comes out ahead again. The hot water employed by your dishwasher goes a long way towards getting the dishes cleaner than they will with just a cursory scrub, and the heat goes a long way towards sanitizing the dishes as well.

At the end of the day, the question of whether to get a dishwasher or to hand wash is a personal one. Give the information above, you can see that it can be a toss up in many respects. Take some time to weigh out the pros and cons and remember that there is a lot of information at your very fingertips to help you make up your mind!
