Freeganism

 

Freeganism is a unique collaboration of many to involve themselves in a complete boycott of the traditional economic system and exchange. The individuals who associate themselves with this movement hold strong to the opinion that the ultimate motive of individuals and corporations to create a “profit” has caused those individuals and businesses to overlook the basic ethical considerations behind production process and certain types of products. Here, I will introduce you to this very popular movement, as well as to the impact that it can have on the environment as a whole.

What is Freeganism?

The title “Freegan” originated by compounding two specific words. These words include that of “Free” and that of “Vegan”. Individuals who consider themselves to be “Vegan” take special care in ensuring that they avoid the purchase, use, and consumption of products that stem from animal sources. In addition to this, these individuals work to ensure that they avoid those products that have been tested in various types of animals. These individuals work to ensure that all animals – small and large – are protected from harm.

Individuals who consider themselves to be “Freegan” place an emphasis on the fact that many items that we purchase, use, and consume will not only negatively impact animals, but also people and the environment. These individuals recognize the fact that many individuals and corporations that specialize in various goods and services that are potentially harmful to life, and the planet as a whole.

These individuals know and understand that the basic process of production from start to finish, and even during transportation, can have a negative impact on people, animals, plant, and other aspects of the environment. These individuals live their lives in such a way that they avoid purchasing these goods and services.

What is Dumpster Diving?

Dumpster diving is a strategy that many individuals who practice freeganism in engage in. Many individuals refer to this technique as “urban foraging”. Basically, this is when an individual or a group of individuals concentrate their focus and efforts on searching the contents of the garbage that is produced by specific retailers in an effort to discover products that can be put to use. Many may also surf through the trash that is produced by residents of a particular community. In the process, many relatively useful products are discovered that can be reused efficiently.

Depending on where those that engage in freeganism elect to dive in dumpsters, many interesting and perfectly decent items can be obtained. These items include various types of foods, books, clothing, shoes, and similar items. If an individual expands their scope of diving areas, and engage in this type of activity for an extended amount of time, it is quite likely to stumble upon many different types of valuable consumer products that have been simply discarded in an effort to acquire newer, more advanced items.

How Can Freeganism Save the Planet?

Freeganism can benefit the environment in many different ways. First, it reduces the amount of overall waste in which we produce as a whole. Individuals that are part of this particular movement work to ensure that they recycle when possible, and also repair those things that they do possess in order to ensure that they completely maximize the use of every single item that is considered to be theirs. In addition to this, freeganists engage in many other activities like gardening, planting trees, and cleaning up local communities from pollution.
